Mercedes Star Diagnostic Review

The Mercedes Star diagnostic tool comes in a variety of formats such as C3, C4 and MB SD Connect C5. The C3 and C4 are very similar, just the difference is that the MB Star C4 is smaller and lightweight, which is very useful due to the C3 being a task in itself setting it up. How Hard is it to use the Mercedes Star Machine?
There is two parts to using the Mercedes Star Diagnostic tool, the first being the setup and the latter actually using it. As you can see above, their are a few leads involved to connect the Mercedes to the star machine.
*   Wire from ECU to the Multiplexor
*   Wire from Multiplexor to the Computer
*   Power Cable to the Laptop (It’s advised never to let the computer run out during diagnostics!)
*   Power pack if low battery that might die during the test
Once the wires have been connected up properly, start the iginition and you should wait until you see a lock appear in the bottom right corner of your computer (near internet signal). Once the lock is present, the computer is connected to the car, therefore start up the DAS/Xentury software and do the following:
*   Find your car using the menu provided (Car -> E Class -> W210 etc)
*   You will then be greeted with a popup notifying that the multiplexor is attempting to connect
*   Once connected, its fairly straight forward – You can perform tests or go into individual units
*   Using F1, F2 and F3, you will be able to navigate through stored fault codes and removing them with the F9 key
*   If faults are not removing, its best to print out the full test (button bottom right), which will contain unique

The Star machine enables you to find a problem, fix it and confirm that it is fixed by erasing the issue and then running another test. If you are feeling confident, you may feel like running some more complex tests i.e. Compression test. I had issues with the fuel injectors in my 320 CDi, therefore I performed a compression test, which was spot on but the second test was the “leak” test, which showed two injectors were faulty.

MB SD C4 Tourismo bus communication error (fixed)

I bought the MB SD C4+Dell D630 Laptop pre-installed bundle, when I test it have the problem SD Connect C4 cannot power on when connected with  Tourismo bus, I contacted there customer service at obd2toolcom, and here is the solution provided by their engineer.
I will explain my problem in detail:
” I have tried 2 different mb sd connect c4 on Tourismo buses and sd connect does not power on.In the meantime those MB SD Connect C4 works normally to any other MB Truck and car.also on Tourismo have check Mb Star C3 and works normally.”
You should check:
bus with OBD
pin 4 + 5
both must be connected and ground
In SDConnect “-” is 5 pin only. There is 4 contact not used in 16pin OBD connector.

A Communication error has occurred when access FPS system


Solution:
– turn OFF/ON BUS ground switch (our remove battery – cable). FPS1 wake up and Mercedes Star Diagnostic recognized FPS1/VIN code.
or
– enter the DAS ATEGO truck come and place manually and then it will work perfect
” Another problem is : “Currently the speed limit is set to 100 km/h. I’m trying to set it to higher value (with MB SD C4 DAS using modified EOL files). On the menu it tells me that I can, because there are higher values (105 km/h. 112 km/h, etc). But when I try to set the speed limit to higher than 100 km/h it doesn’t allow me to do it (can’t save the changes). When I try to set it below 100 km/h everything goes fine.”
I done the Access special settings , and it working perfect now!

Normal Star Diagnosis vs Developer Mode

Since these differences depend on the DVD version, you will get this nowhere reliable information. The Dev version contains features that are not always released for service and are therefore not available on the “normal” versions of SD. Without another license key there is nothing.

The difference is just the license key.
Other key: More rights and possibilities. For example, there are pure car licenses (Smart, MB …) but also full licenses, with which you can read and work on all Daimler products. In the service, the computers are online, that is, it is not possible to operate a computer easily with a different license
So really a developer tool is not it but that’s why … No one works with us, because we use something completely different. Not so pretty, but much more powerful and flexible than the MB Star C4. But also much error-prone, which one must avoid in the service by all means.
Also, Developermode is available in Xentry. There are a few more things you can do.

This is a pure development tool. The “normal” skilled worker or master in the branch can do almost nothing with it.
Without knowing which “commands” to execute in a particular order, garnix happens.
Did it “coincidentally” but managed to adjust ANYWHERE, ….. yes, and then ??? How do you get that back when things are not going as expected?
So without the expertise of the ECU supervisor, you have no chance.
And even the stupidest …. the necessary description files are there are not
many here in the forum are not even clear with the serial diagnosis, and that is in comparison to children’s stuff.

How to use Xentry DAS on AVDI passthru

What is the AVDI recognized by Xentry?
Xentry Passthru is different from from regular Xentry openshell. Xentry passthru does not use SDconnect toolkit. When you launch the program it will give you a dropdown where you can choose which J2534 device (can be found at http://www.obd2tool.com/) you want to use.
How to use Xentry Passthru?
If you got the Xentry Passthru installed, there is a tool which will do the dirty work for you.
Normally it is not linked or doesnt have desktop shortcut but resides (at least in my installation)
under
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mercedes-Benz\xentry\bin\SelectPTDevice
IF you have installed your passthru (would that be AVDI or anything else) with correct drivers, registry entries etc it will just present you with list of options and you select your VCI from dropdown list.
Heard good things about fvdi abrites commander J2534 compatibility (real thing, don’t know about clones) so it shouldn’t be a big deal. Recently i have tried to use BOSCH KTS560 as passthru and it works perfectly okay.
For curiosity, i did also test the 20-euro MiniVCI that gets normally bundled with Toyota techstream packages. to my surprise it also works albeit slow and sometimes freezes the application. This one can be actually made to work even with old DAS like 2009, 2012….it’s just matter of proper settings in cal.ini and slave.ini
For DAS/Xentry users:
Old thread – but do not run the SetPassThruDAS.exe, as it was written for DAS/Xentry for Windows XP, and not Openshell or star diagnose Xentry Passthru. All you need to do is install a fresh OS (Windows 7 Enterprise x86 or x64 SP1) ideally on a physical laptop, connect the AVDI device to the USB port and run the SetupInterface_yourserialnumber_PASSTHRU_xxxxxxx.exe and Next through the setup process. If you have a current version of the Passthru software, you will see a grayed out option for installing drivers for DAS that you cannot select, but do not be concerned about that. It will detect the AVDI, and install the appropriate J2534 dll files in the Windows\System32 directory. Then continue installing your Passthru software provided on the Blu-ray from Daimler. It will take a while to install, and once it verifies your hardware ID and installs your StartKey, launch Xentry Passthru from the icon it creates, and it will prompt you first thing as to what interface you want to use. You will see Abritus72 AVDI PT (your serial number here) in the drop down box. Select that device, and that is all their is to it. Xentry should automatically communicate with the vehicle.
